Straight from the kick off the Hammers took the game to Ruislip and forced a line out in their half, which a Ruislip player took quickly and somehow threw the ball directly into the hands of Nick Ball who accepted the gift and ran away unopposed to score the opening try after only a minutes play. Neil McClure kicked the conversion to make the score 0-7 to the Hammers. From the re-start the Ruislip forwards infringed at a ruck and Neil McClure stepped up again and kick the penalty to make the score 0-10. The Hammers forwards were now in charge and forcing the Ruislip players to make mistakes and from a breakdown the Ruislip backs came up offside and Neil McClure calmly kick over the penalty to increase the Hammers lead to 0-13 after 15 minutes of play. The back row of James Boysons, Steve Harrington and Nick Ball were winning the battle at the breakdowns proving good ball for Neil Richardson (a late substitute at scrum half after Oliver Peters was too ill to start the match) to launch the Hammers backs into several attacks at the Ruislip defence. From one of these phases of play, Richard Braithwaite made an incisive break from just inside his own half and beat several players before passing inside to Alex Ratcliffe who scored under the posts. Neil McClure converted the try making the score 0-20. Things were going so well for the away side that they relaxed and allowed Ruislip back into the game by giving away two unnecessary penalties in quick succession that Ruislip made good use of to get within 5 metres of the Hammers try line. From the lineout, Ruislip did a catch and drive and rumbled over for a try in the corner that was not converted to make the score 5-20. This try spurred Ruislip into life, as they now had the upper hand in the scrums making life difficult for the Hammers to control their own ball. From this pressure Ruislip were able to pin down the Hammers in their own half for some time and eventually they got their second try after a missed tackle out wide which allowed the Ruislip player to sprint to the try line under the posts. This try was converted making the score 12-20. The game supremacy had changed in the last 10 minutes and Ruislip were putting all the pressure on the Hammers forwards at the rucks and breakdowns and driving them back into their half of the field. From a 5 metre scrum Ruislip secured the ball at the base of the scrum and drove over the line to score a converted try making the score now 19-20 in this exciting game. The Hammers had a chance to increase their lead just before half time when James Boysons made a fantastic break from the 10 metre line in his half and looked certain to score, but was just tackled short of the line when he was caught in two minds whether to pass to his supporting players or go it alone, so the opportunity was missed.

Ruislip came out strongly at the start of the second half using their bigger forwards to drive at the heart of the Hammers defence and at one of the numerous rucks the Hammers gave away a penalty which the Ruislip fly-half kicked to make the score 22-20. With both sets of supporters adding their voice to encourage their respective teams the game became very tactical, with both sides looking to put boot to the ball to gain territorial advantage. From a line out the Hammers moved the ball quickly through the backs were it reach Alex Ratcliffe who made good ground and set up a ruck which Ruislip illegally slowed down the ball giving away a kickable penalty, that Neil McClure put through the posts to make the score 22-23 to the Hammers. The Hammers from the re-start moved the ball through several hands setting up many good attacking platforms that pushed Ruislip back just inside their 22 metre line. From a line out that was won by Bart Casagrande the forwards set up a maul and drove towards the Ruislip line. The ball was taken on by Alex Scarrett and Mark Blyghton before the ball made its way to the backs and from a set move Henry Tanner crashed over for a well worked try. Neil McClure conversion kick came back off a post, so the score remained 22-28 to the Hammers with about 10 minutes left in the match. The Hammers forwards kept the ball for a few minutes and Ruislip infringed at a maul to give another kicking opportunity to Neil McClure who made the kick look easy and increased the Hammers lead to 22-31 with 5 minutes left in the game. Ruislip now threw everything at the Hammers who defence held firm. Ruislip got a penalty just outside the Hammers 22 metre line which they kicked to make the score 25-31. From the re-start Ruislip put the Hammers under tremendous pressure again but our defence was solid and Ruislip could not get into a position to score a try and it seem that time was running out for them to win the game. Hammers gave away a penalty on the half way line and Ruislip kicked for territory that took then inside the Hammers 22 metre area in the last minute of the match. The Hammers stole the line out ball and seemed to have everything under control to kick the ball to touch to end the game, but somehow the ball was thrown out of the ruck by one of the Hammers forwards toward fly-half Toby Harris, who quickly had two Ruislip forwards on him and he was held up in the tackle. The referee awarded a scrum to Ruislip on the 5 metre line in the very last play of the game. Ruislip won the scrum and moved the ball wide where it was re-cycled and they created enough space for their winger to score in the right hand corner, making the score 30-31 with the conversion to come. Everyone held their breath as the Ruislip fly-half took the conversion. The ball seemed to hang in the air for a long while, but it sailed through the posts to give Ruislip the winning score of 32-31, as the final whistle was blown.

The Hammers team was devastated as they left the field. They had played really well and deserved to win this game. This narrow defeat has now made their job of staying in this league even harder, with only a handful of games left to play.
Sat, 28 Jan 2012 20:51:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2012-01-28-1st-xv-vs-ruislip/ Match report: 2012-01-21 (1st XV vs. Colchester)
Colchester RFC made the trip to Hurlingham Park this Saturday and the 1st XV knew they had to raise their game if they were to compete against the second place team in the league.

The Hammers started strongly straight from the kick off with good interplay between the forwards and backs. The home side was awarded an attacking scrum just 5 metres from the Colchester try line, but the possible try scoring opportunity was lost, when Colchester won the ball against the head and cleared the ball to touch. After this initial pressure by the Hammers, the Colchester forwards started to gain control of the game and win most of the scrums and line outs. At a ruck the Hammers gave away a penalty that was kicked by Colchester to take the lead after 10 minutes. From the re-start kick off the Hammers defence went to sleep and allow the Colchester No.8 to sprint un-touched for 40 metres before being tackled, but he was able to off load to a supporting colleague who scored. This try was converted to make the score 10-0. Colchester now raised their game again and a flowing move between backs and forwards left the Hammers defence wide open and from a ruck the opposition scrum half collected the ball and ran towards the try line with only Neil McClure to beat at full back. He chipped the ball over Neil McClure, who made no attempt to get out his way and obstructive him from retrieving the ball. McClure was sent to the sin bin by the referee for 10 minutes for this offence, and from the resulting penalty Colchester made the score 13-0. In many matches previous to this game the Hammers might have caved in after giving away so many points and losing a player in a short space of time, but the team started to put some pressure on Colchester when down to 14 men and from open play the ball was moved through the backs towards Henry Tanner on the left wing, who took the ball at pace and out sprinted the Colchester cover defence from half way, to score a very good try that was converted by Richard Braithwaite. Shortly after this, the Hammers were awarded a penalty that Richard Braithwaite calmly slotted over to make the score 13-10 to Colchester. The Hammers were now playing some good rugby with the forwards getting the upper hand at the breakdown through the good work by Nick Ball, Alex Scarrett and Hugh Campbell. Just when it seem that Colchester were on the back foot and beginning to buckle due to the pressure they were being put under, they were gifted a try right on half time when a loose pass in the Hammers back line was intercepted by the Colchester outside centre who raced away to score a try under the posts which was converted to make the score 20-10. This was a body blow to the Hammers side that had showed in latter stages of the first half that they could hold their own against a well drilled Colchester team.

The second half got under way with Colchester applying early pressure on the Hammers defence which nearly produced a try that was denied by a knock on. From the resulting scrum the Hammers once again lost the ball on their own put in and the Colchester scrum half made ground to towards the 22 metre line before passing to his supporting blindside flanker who sped away to score a try after only two minutes into the second half. This try was not converted but increased Colchester’s lead to 25-10. The Hammers defence was put under immerse pressure after this and Colchester quickly ran in two more tries of which none were converted. There seemed no way back for the home side, but they once again rallied and produced some really good rugby, but couldn’t put points on the board, even when the Colchester right wing was send to the sin bin for aggressive play. Neil McClure finally got some points on the board when he kicked a penalty for the Hammers to reduce the score to 35-13. The Hammers kept up the pressure and it finally told when the ball found its way to Pieter Vans Rensburg who scored a try in the left hand corner to make the score 35-18, with five minutes left in the game. Colchester scored the final try of the game from a scrum 20 metres out from the Hammers line when good between their backs and forwards saw the No.8 crash over under the posts for a converted try, making the final score 42-18 to Colchester.

The final score does not reflect that the Hammers played much better rugby than in recent weeks in this game. This could prove to be a stepping stone for the team to build on over the next few weeks, when they play opposition in the lower half of the London North One league table.
Sat, 21 Jan 2012 20:51:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2012-01-21-1st-xv-vs-colchester/ Old Hams: Nick Burrough Thu, 19 Jan 2012 04:43:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/social/old-hams/#nick-burrough Match report: 2012-01-15 (u13s vs. Grasshoppers)
Not a good day for the under 13’s away at Grasshoppers, as this is a game the boys would like to forget very quickly.

The pattern of the match was set straight from the kick off by the Hammers team, when they allowed a Grasshoppers player to run untouched to score the first converted try. This was followed by six unanswered tries by Grasshoppers in the first half, due to no one in the Hammers side tackling the opposition. To rubbed salt into the wounds of the under 13’s, all but one of these tries was unconverted by the Grasshoppers fly-half to make the score 47 -0 at half time.

Some stern words from the coach and the players themselves seem to galvanise the Hammers team play in the second half as they began to tackled and create turnover ball, from which Alexandre Coyard manufactured a great try from open play, by running down the left hand touchline and evading several tackles from 60 metres out. Henry Collins converted to make the score 47-7. This try seemed to spur on the team, who now took the game to Grasshoppers for 15 minutes through Marc Plantenga, Raphael Fackler, Robert Power, Alexander Coward and Milo Storey who all played well in the second half. But in the end, the score gap was too large to recover from and Grasshoppers scored a few more tries to make the final score 76-7.

This was a harsh lesson for everyone in the team, that if they don’t make their tackles during the game they are not going to able to win any matches, whatever standard of team they come up against.
Sun, 15 Jan 2012 11:10:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2012-01-15-u13s-vs-grasshoppers/ Match report: 2012-01-14 (1st XV vs. Eton Manor)
The Hammers made another trip to the Essex region for their match against Eton Manor on a cold frosty day, when they were looking improve on their present league position.

The Hammers had a promising opening start to the game making good ground with the forwards drives but the resolute Eaton Manor defence held firm from the initial onslaught. From a lineout Eaton Manor secure good ball and nearly scored the opening try when their fly half saw that their right wing was up against Bart Casagrande and chipped the ball over the top, which he gathered and looked certain to score, but a last ditched tackled by Pieter Vans Rensburg unbalanced him enough to loose control of the ball and from the resulting scrum for the knock on the Hammers cleared the ball to touch. Just after this Henry Tanner nearly intercepted a pass by the Eaton Manor centre inside our twenty two, but just failed to hold onto the ball, which had he held no one would have prevented him from scoring. Another chance came for the Hammers when Neil McClure made a counter attack break from own half and passed to Henry Tanner who beat several players and gave an inside pass to Jimmy Graham supporting who thought he was going to score, but a covering Eaton Manor defender put in a strong tackle dislodging the ball making it go forward just metres from the try line. From the resulting scrum the Hammers won the ball against the head and Eaton Manor were penalised for being offside. Neil McClure kicked the resulting penalty, so making the score 3-0 to Hammers. Eaton Manor started to put some pressure on the Hammers defence after this and from a scum just outside the twenty metre line their scrum half ran through the Hammers back line without being tackled by anyone, to score their opening try which was converted. The Eaton Manor team was now dominating the game and should have scored again when they created an overlap on the right wing but a final forward pass was spotted by the referee and the Eaton Manor try was disallowed. From the scrum Eaton Manor won the ball which was moved quickly from one side of the pitch to the other and their centre crashed over for a try which was not converted, making the score 12-3 to them after 25 minute. The Hammers raised their game with Charlie Baillie and James Boysons in the forwards putting in a great deal of hard work to secure ball for our backs who use the possession wisely through Toby Harris and Neil McClure, but the Hammers could not break the good defensive line of home side. Neil McClure had a chance to kick a penalty to increase the Hammers score during this period, but just failed with his attempted. After soaking up this pressure Eaton Manor scored again when the ball was moved to the outside centre from a line out who ran straight over the attempted tackle of Hennie De Jager, to score a try under the posts which was converted. Hennie was injured trying to make that tackle and was replaced by Alex Ratcliffe. A few minutes later the Hammers were penalised at a breakdown and Eaton Manor kicked the resulting penalty to make the score at half time 22-3.

Straight from the re-start kick off the Hammers gain good ground through driving play by Nick Ball and Hugh Campbell from an advantage played by the referee when Eaton Manor knocked the ball on, but somehow the Hammers forwards lost the control of the ball at a ruck they should have won and Eaton Manor countered attack moving the ball swiftly through the backs and forwards were it eventually found its way to the ever present scrum half who ran unopposed to the line to score a try after only one minute into the second half, which was converted. It was a long way back for the Hammers from 29-3 down, but there was still a chance to get something out of the game as we were winning good clean lineout ball through Bart Casagrande and Nick Ball and our backs looked dangerous when they had the ball in the right areas of the field. But with all the pressure and the amount of ball the Hammers team had through the second half we couldn’t get the tries we needed to put Eaton Manor under pressure as we missed several opportunities from good positions to score tries from such as five metres scrums and line outs on a couple of occasions. Finally from one of these attacking line outs Bart Casagrande secured clean lineout ball and from the resulting rolling maul Jimmy Graham broke off and scored a try that was not converted to make the score 29-8. The Hammers continued to have the majority of play and territory in the second half for long periods but did not add any more points to the scoreboard. From one of their few attacks in the second half Eaton Manor scored their final try in the last five minutes from good open play between their forwards and backs. This try was converted so making the final score 34-8 to Eaton Manor.

The may difference between the teams was that Eton Manor took their chances when they came along, whereas the Hammers missed several opportunities to score that would have put pressure o the home team.
Sat, 14 Jan 2012 20:51:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2012-01-14-1st-xv-vs-eton-manor/ Match report: 2012-01-14 (2nd XV vs. Dorking II)
It was a thriller, a game befitting the top of the table clash. 1st vs 2nd, Hammersmith and Fulham vs Dorking, both teams driven by the knowledge that the result of this game could crown a king, or reaffirm the status quo. Everything to play for, everything to lose. – both sides knew their season could turn on this very game. And in the end, there could only be one winner. Unless it was a draw.

80 minutes later, an exhausted Hammersmith & Fulham 2nd XV walked off the field. Victorious.

Dorking drew first blood. The opening 5 minutes saw Dorking’s talented backs spread the ball wide and blow holes in the Hammers defence. The pace was quick and their running sharp, but the Hammers poor tackling was just as much to blame for these opening Dorking meters. Sniping through holes and making ground, the Dorking 10 spread the ball wide to his 13 only 10 meters out from the Hammers line. He strolled over to open the score, 0-7 Dorking.

Annoyed at the soft try and the weak start, the boys came back strong. Attacking hard, the Hammers forced a scrum on the Dorking 22. A set of phases rumbled up the paddock before Neil Richardson (10) slotted an unexpected-but-handy field goal from right in front: 3-7. Taking the restart wide, the eventually ball found CCS (13), who parted the Dorking line to make good meters. Supported ably by Bourne (12) and the outside men of Leon (11) and North (14), Richardson began to string the talented hammers backs together into solid phases. Side-to-side the boys went before Sergeant crossed the chalk and took the scores out to 8-7, the Hammers taking the lead for the first time. A well deserved try.

Dorking responded. Fractured play and poor tackling yet again allowed holes to be exploited by the Dorking backs, well supported by a determined and linking back-row. Punching it up the middle, the Dorking 12 shook the tackles and ran 30 meters to cross near the posts, reclaiming the lead but shanking the conversion. 8-13 Dorking.

Enraged by yet another soft try - the second in 15 minutes - the Hammers woke up. Coming to grips with their opposing front row, Gabbo (1), McEachern (30 and Rees – fresh from his 21st birthday celebrations – began to really pressure the Dorking scrum, no tall order given their talented tight-head. Pick-and-go’s from the base by Pettitt – barely 20 minutes off the plane after the boy-band’s latest tour of the midlands – gave Tom Winter (8) an abundance of quick ball. A lazy Dorking penalty allowed Jack Sargent to slot a penalty, before he added to his tally by scoring and converting again. Hammers 18-13 going into the half time break.

With their defence stiffened by a firm Super Coach Kiwi-talking-to, the Hammers came out with all guns blazing, aided by the cracking ruck work of Hayman (4) who was everywhere, spoiling ball and making tackles. It all came to ahead via a brilliant blind-side attack that featured McEachern Gabbo, Winter, and whoever, - all making serious metres - before a heartbreaking knock-on at the Dorking 5 meter line stopped another certain Hammers try.

The game turned on the next scrum. Hunkering down and driving as one, the Hammers turned the Dorking scrum over and won against the feed. Winter fired the ball out to Neil, who passed to Bourne, who passed to CCS, …. Try! It almost seemed easy.

It started a flood. For the next 15 minutes the Hammers crossed no less than twice more. First Richardson used his step to shake some defenders and score by the posts before Leon demonstrated the value of always chasing a side-line penalty kick, reclaiming the ball and scoring after an ill-advised attempt by the Dorking winger to keep the ball alive. Elated, the boys began to relax….

…big mistake. For the remaining 15 minutes Dorking threw themselves at the Hammers defence like a banzai charge. Tough scrum after tough scrum tested the boys, tackle after tackle….Dorking crossed once, shrinking the margin down to 11

….scrum…scrum….penalty…phase….5 minutes to go…..scrum again, with Anscombe doing over his opposite man….tackle….Gabbo penalised….scrum again….tackle…ruck….

Dorking try.

It was not enough though, and with only 45 seconds to go, the Hammers held out. And while there was much to improve on, and a lot of Rugby left, there was much to celebrate as well – top of the table, undefeated, victorious.
Sat, 14 Jan 2012 20:51:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2012-01-14-2nd-xv-vs-dorking-ii/ News: Chairman's December Report

The 1st XV unfortunately lost all three games this month, which means they will have to win a large majority of their remaining games, if they are to stay in the London North One League next season. The team is playing well in patches, but need to reproduce this high standard of play throughout the remaining games left in the season. Hopefully some of the large number of 1st XV players on the injury list will be returning to full fitness in the next few weeks, to strengthen squad for the final push up the league table, which Mark Blyghton aspects in the next few months.

The 2nd XV can’t seem to stop winning at the moment, keeping their undefeated run going with excellent performances that sees them top the Canterbury Shield League. I know their captain Andrew Rogan will be looking to maintain this good run, right through until the end of the season.

Captain Mike Gane has every right to be happy with the form of his 3rd XV players as they are still on track to qualify for the merit table play offs as winners of their league, even after the number of changes to his side ever week due to unavailability of players from teams higher up the club.

The 4th XV are scoring a large number of tries in every match and are still holding top spot in their merit table league. They are looking to win the competition at the end of the season and I doubt Adam Saul the captain, will accept anything less from his side by the end of the campaign.

Felix Whitechapel has kept the 5th XV playing exciting open rugby all season that all his players are enjoying. Also he is keeping the club spirit going with good old fashion H & F RFC socialising after games, with the opposition.

The club is doing well overall, but the 1st XV need to pick up some wins with additional try bonus points over the next few months, to consolidate their position higher up the league.

Terry Alleyne Club Chairman
Wed, 11 Jan 2012 14:20:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/club/news/2012-01/chairmans-december-report/ Match report: 2012-01-08 (u13s vs. Saracens B)
The under 13’s played their first match of the New Year against Saracens Amateurs RFC in Southgate, North London on a mild winters day.

The team started off the match at a disadvantage as only thirteen players had turned up for the match and had to borrow a player off the opposition to make a game of it. From the start the organised Saracens forwards put pressure on the Hammers defence, but good work by Raphael Fackler and Louis Depuy D’Angeac preventive the opposition from scoring early on in the game. But eventually Saracens did score the opening try after the Hammers missed a few tackles in middle of the pitch. The match continued in the same vain until half time with Saracens scoring two more tries without converting any of them making the score 15 – 0 to them at half time.

In the second half the Hammers nearly scored straight from the kick off when Alexandre Coyard picked up a loose ball just inside his own half and sprinted clear towards the try line to score a try it seemed, but somehow he dropped the ball when no one was around when he was running, so the chance was gone. The Hammers played some good rugby with new boy Sarchyn playing his first game for the team, making good ground by strong runs into the Saracens defence, supported by Henry Collins who had another good game.

But the extra man that the Saracens team had started to tell, along with the substitutions they made to bring on fresh legs to boost their play. This added pressure produced numerous tries for Saracens team late on in the game, making the final score was 39 -0.

The score at the end of the match did not reflect the strong performance the Hammers under 13’s team produced against a strong Saracens team that is in second place in the league, as they never gave up and tackled really well and made a game of it against a good Saracens side.
Sun, 08 Jan 2012 11:10:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2012-01-08-u13s-vs-saracens-b/ Match report: 2012-01-07 (1st XV vs. North Walsham)
On a sunny but windy day, the Hammers entertained North Walsham at Hurlingham Park. It was an important game for both teams as a win for either side would keep them out of the relegation zone of the league.

The home team played with the wind in the first half and kept North Walsham pinned in their half for sometime. But due to nerves or the adverse conditions, both sides made a lot of handling errors, so there were lots of scrums and the game was not very exciting for the large number of spectators. Just as it seem that it was going to be a low scoring match James Boysons made a break from a scrum near half way, beating several players before giving a scoring pass to the supporting Ali Lines. This lead didn’t last long as from a lineout the North Walsham scrum half made a decisive break and off loaded to his centre who out ran the cover defence from twenty metres, to score under the post. This try was converted making the score 5-7. Shortly after scoring the North Walsham forwards fell foul of the referee at the breakdown, so giving away a penalty that Neil McClure kicked making the score 8-7. But not for the first time this season the Hammers gave away a very soft try straight away after taking a lead, by dropping a pass in centre of the pitch that North Walsham kicked through over the Hammers try line and claimed the touch down, which the referee gave in their favour to make the score 8-12. Both sets of forwards then tried to muscle they way down the field, but North Walsham gave away two kickable penalties around the fringes, from which Neil McClure slotted both over to make the score 14-12. From a passage of play just near the half way line Will North intercepted a Walsham pass on the left wing and scored under the posts. This try was converted to make the score at half time 21-12 to the Hammers, which was good news for the home side.

Disaster happened straight from the kick off, as North Walsham score a converted try, so making it a tight game at 21-19. A few minutes later a poor kick and chase by the Hammers allowed the North Walsham backs to counter attack from sixty metres and after the ball had gone through several pairs of hands they made space for their left wing to score a converted try, to take the lead 21-26 after ten minutes of the second half. The Hammers tried to make a game of it with good work by James Boysons in the forwards and Alex Bourne in the centre, but the ball always seemed to fall in the hands of a North Walsham player, as they kept up the pressure on the Hammers try line. Midway through the half Ali Lines had to leave the game due to leg injury which meant a major reshaping of the home team, as there was no scrum half substitute on the bench. So Jack Sargent went from centre to scrum half and Pieter Van Rensburg came on a full back for the rest of the game that was slowly slipping away from the Hammers as they couldn’t get out of their own half for much of the remaining game. From a five metre scrum near the Hammers line the referee awarded a penalty try to North Walsham when he deemed that Jack Sargent had impeded a scoring opportunity for them, by illegal means. With the conversion being successful it seemed a log way back for the Hammers at 21-33, but the team showed great resilience by scoring a very good try by Charlie Baillie from rolling maul that was converted by Neil McClure to make a score line of 28-33, with five minutes left on the clock. Just when looked like the Hammers had secured a losing a losing bonus point, it was snatched away from the team, when Walsham scored a try under the posts from driving play by their forwards. The try was converted so making the final score 28-40 to North Walsham.

This result meant that the teams swapped positions in the league, so the Hammers now occupy third relegation position on points difference and look to rectify this in the next game away, against Eaton Manor.
Sat, 07 Jan 2012 20:51:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2012-01-07-1st-xv-vs-north-walsham/ Social: New Years Day Pub Crawl 2012
It's almost time to partake in a time honoured tradition at the club, namely the Hammers New Year's Day Pub Crawl.
Sun, 01 Jan 2012 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/social/new-years-day-pub-crawl-2012/ Match report: 2011-12-17 (1st XV vs. Old Colfeians)
Not a lot can be taken out of this game for the H & F 1st XV as the match was effectively over by half time. The score by then was 38 – 0 to Old Colfeians, who had secured their fourth try bonus point after only 25 minutes.

The Hammers did a lot better in the second half spending most of the time in the Old Colfeians half, that led to Chris Gabbert and Tom Knight scoring unconverted tries.

With the tightening up of our defence, the Hammers kept a clean sheet in the second half until the final few minutes of game, when Old Colfeians scored a try that was converted, making the final score 45-10.
Sat, 17 Dec 2011 20:51:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2011-12-17-1st-xv-vs-old-colfeians/ Match report: 2011-12-11 (u13s vs. Verulamians) Sun, 11 Dec 2011 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2011-12-11-u13s-vs-verulamians/ Match report: 2011-12-10 (1st XV vs. Chingford) Sat, 10 Dec 2011 20:51:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2011-12-10-1st-xv-vs-chingford/ Match report: 2011-12-10 (2nd XV vs. Old Reigatians)
The boys dodged a bullet. In fact, they dodged a full magazine of them, Matrix-esque, barely snaking a try in the final minutes of the game to taken the score out to 17-15 against 3rd place Old Reigations. Their temples grazed, the Hammersmith & Fulham 2nd XV left the field proud to have finished the calendar year undefeated and top of the table, but chastised with just how close they had come to losing not only the game, but also their position at the top of the league.

It hadn’t started ideally, the boys hampered by a short preparation and the usual mix of team changes that saw them take to the field a disrupted outfit. Nevertheless, they were confident that despite these issues, and the cold and muddy conditions which did not lend themselves to the usual blend of running Rugby so favoured by the red-and-blue, they would walk away with another win and finish the year unsullied.

Old Reigations didn’t read the script . From the outset they wanted it more, much more, and in almost every aspect of the game they were hungrier. Their tackles were lower, their forwards more purposeful, their clearouts more effective, and their passes shaper. The Hammers by contrast, were lethargic and loose, with a still-sick but brave Andrew Lynch (12) - who the night before, had praying at the porcelain altar thanks to a bad prawn salad – unable to bang it up the middle effectively. Hampered by that lack of centre-field go forward, the Hammers chose to swing the ball wide, only to find their outside backs closed down by a pressing Reigation defence. Passes become forced, balls went to ground, and opportunities missed. It was a only matter of time before a Reigate try was run-in, their winger streaking down the sideline with purpose and crossing near the corner flag to open the account 5-0.

That woke the forwards up a little but not enough. Good busting runs by and Alex Dudley (4) and Charlie Baillie (8), were wasted as Reigate’s lose forwards pilfered the ball or counter-rucked, spoiling the Hammers momentum and not giving Haddow (9) quick ball. Strong counter-runs by a vocal TVF (13) and a piercing run by Tom Jacobs (15) - who fell agonisingly short of the try-line on at least two occasions - were wasted when supporting players did not secure the Hammers ball. Heartened by these failures, Reigate crossed again when a Hammers scrum went backwards inside their own 22. Matters become more serious when Adam Cryar (14) fell to an unseen sniper and limped off the field. Despite the mouthy Ali Lines taking his place, the half still saw the boys down 10-0.

A stern talking to by Super Coach Neale (Kiwi) did not arrest the slide. A misfiring Hammers line out was severely tested on numerous occasions, and so it was when an accurate Regiate kick to the corner saw them lose the line-out and Reigate drive the ball over from 5 meters out. Now down 15-0, and with only 25 minutes to go, the game looked to be well-and-truly slipping away. Proportionate to this tally, the Reigate chat also increased, sticking the knife in further. The game looked lost.

It wasn’t. After witnessing the display on the sidelines, an agitated Simon Cross (7, replacement) and Paul Arthurs (5, replacement) were put into the game. Moving the direct running Rory Rigney (7) to 12 to replace the brave but wearied Lynch, the backs suddenly were on the front foot, with Cross and Arthurs linking with Captain Ade Furniss (1) to put some lead in the Hammers pencil. A great period of play followed, numerous hit ups and violent clear outs finally giving Haddow the right kind of ball which he could feed to Winter (10). The Hammers finally broke through when Captain Furniss raced through which an incredible burst of front row speed on the blind. Hands followed, before the hard work of Charlie Baille paid off and he crossed the chalk. 15-5.

There was hope. Back and forth the boys went, probing for weaknesses. Morris (2), Pettitt (6) and Leon (14) and all injected themselves. So strong was the will-to-win a cheeky Reigate intercept runner was run down from across the field by TVF and stopped with him with meters to spare. Adding cream to this cake was the subsequent sin-bin, which saw the whiter-than-white TVF confused with a very ebony and incredulous Mr Beautiful, Leon Joseph who was given his marching orders! Minutes later, a thundering Arthurs trucked it up the middle with Cross up his backside, getting over the advantage line and giving Haddow the quickest of quick ball. To Winter, to Rory, to TVF, to Lines…..try! 10-15. Five give minutes to go.

Play slowed, with a desperate Reigate trying to hang on. Pick-and-drive, pick-and-drive they went, before the Reigate 10 tried to kick for the corner. Miss-kicked, it found the waiting hands of Jacobs on the 10 meter line, who counter-ran on the open side brilliantly. His pass found Rory, who found the waiting hands of TVF…..who ran 40 meters and scored under the post! Converted by Winter – Win! 17-15.

It was a thriller that never should’ve happened, but it was well earned. Man-of-the-Match Dudley earned his pint, his positive attitude when all was dark rewarded, as was Cross, whose injection along with Arthurs turned the attitude of the boys on the field around, and should remind all just what a long hill to climb awaits us in the months ahead.
Sat, 10 Dec 2011 20:51:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2011-12-10-2nd-xv-vs-old-reigatians/ Match report: 2011-12-10 (5th XV vs. SODAM)
On a chilly Saturday in December, the happy Hammers congregated in Hurlingham Park for their last home match of 2011. Ed Spooner appeared all pumped up after a fun run from Wandsworth. While the rest of us carried on our usual casual warm up, Ed was like a greyhound out of the blocks, joyfully bounding around after the ball and running some truly great lines. Meanwhile Paul arrived on that cold afternoon fully prepared, minus socks, hair and his 7s t-shirt. The pundits expected a high quality, high velocity performance from the Hammers. Unfortunately the first 15 minutes were a sad disappointment. Some nonchalant handling and a laissez-faire approach to mauling saw us placed under early pressure from which SODAM profited for two rapid converted tries. 14-0 to SODAM. Another team might have cut their losses and ran or felt that cold wind and remembered that they should have stayed in bed watching Saturday Kitchen. But Hammer’s weren’t bothered and Ed was still chomping at the bit way out in left field. Paul said something about Balls Deep and then Felix, like a cat, slinked his way through the SODAM defence for try. From the graceful to the brutal, a shell shocked SODAM next felt the brooding power of Paul who barged over for our second try. Meanwhile another Balls Deep move resulted in Giacomo adding one for the photo album, sustaining a beautiful shiner that should probably have been lanced.

HALF TIME: HAMMERS 10-14 SODAM. Now very much in the ascendancy the Hammers took advantage of the shift in momentum. Suddenly the Hammers started to spread it and Ed, who had been lusting insatiably after that ball all game finally got his chance and bolted like a greased whippet for try time. Not a minute later, we were back again and our irresistible onslaught continued with Tony driving over for another try. Could this day get any better? It could for one man. A kick, a bounce, calamity and confusion, then there was Nico. Calamity and chaos, Nico burst out of the fire to sprint home from half way and touch down under the posts whilst evading a Felix in hot pursuit. This was an important moment. Many, many years of hurt were banished in 6 seconds. The last time Nico scored a try I was still playing with Duplo. The final phase of the game witnessed Tony and Ginger, hardy veterens, leading the forwards in a heroic defence of our try line in which the ball was held up innumerable times (or was it?). Tony demonstrated to everyone how to tackle like a bastard by driving and dumping a giant SODAM prop back into the mud. Meanwhile, the Backs were freezing their nuts off. SODAM did manage a try at the end but we weren’t bothered.

FINAL SCORE: HAMMERS 25-19 SODAM

POST MATCH Pev had come to play for the Hammers but was drafted by SODAM before any of us had met him, except Simon who didn’t tell us. So when Kev met Pev in the shower, Kev was predictably confused by the appearance of this randomer soaping up next to him.

Cheers to SODAM for joining us for Lash Ball at the Sheaf. They showed the same spirit in the pub as they did on the field. Many suffered particularly Tim and Mrs Dave (A SODAM player’s girlfriend). Some were literally all over the table (Ed), and one person cleverly pointed out that the SODAM prop who had a beard was in fact a prop who had a beard. Good game, good drinking, good night.

PS: To those in the 3s who have become acquainted with a couple of my housemates i’ll start the bidding at a Homemade Pie and a pint of Guinness or two for the price of one?
Sat, 10 Dec 2011 06:29:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2011-12-10-5th-xv-vs-sodam/ News: International Tickets

The Club gets an allocation of tickets for all England’s home games at Twickenham. It was the first time they have fielded a nearly unchanged team in consecutive games, which was what the captain and coaches have been trying to achieve all season, as they knew this would lead to better results in the league campaign.

Their was no stopping the 2nd, 3rd and 4th XV teams from maintaining the top spots in their merit table leagues, with strong performances from all sides. A good blend of players, are in these teams that are competing at a very high level every weekend. They is a long way to go before the teams qualify for the play offs in March 2012, but they are on the right track to meet this objective.

The 5th XV once again have had some fantastic results over the month, playing good rugby which quite a few of the players moving up into the higher sides on merit.

As a club we are still attracting new players, which is a good sign as it shows that our internal and external recruitment structures are working well.

We are now moving into the difficult month of December where the numbers attending training and the availability of players always drops off due to the up and coming festivities, but with the our outstanding performances over the last few weeks, I can see another successful month ahead for all sides, as we have players who are committed to the club cause and want to play at the highest level possible.

Terry Alleyne Club Chairman
Wed, 07 Dec 2011 14:20:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/club/news/2011-12/chairmans-november-report/ Social: Hammers Christmas Social - SUIT UP!
Like all great plans, this one is simple, Suit up
Sat, 03 Dec 2011 20:51:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/social/hammers-christmas-social-suit-up/ Match report: 2011-12-03 (2nd XV vs. Hove) Sat, 03 Dec 2011 20:51:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2011-12-03-2nd-xv-vs-hove/ Match report: 2011-12-03 (1st XV vs. Bury St Edmunds) Sat, 03 Dec 2011 20:51:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2011-12-03-1st-xv-vs-bury-st-edmunds/ Match report: 2011-11-27 (u13s vs. Bedford) Sun, 27 Nov 2011 17:51:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2011-11-27-u13s-vs-bedford/ Match report: 2011-11-26 (5th XV vs. Mill Hill) Sat, 26 Nov 2011 19:24:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2011-11-26-5th-xv-vs-mill-hill/ Match report: 2011-11-20 (Ladies XV vs. Tabard) Sun, 20 Nov 2011 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2011-11-20-ladies-xv-vs-tabard/ Match report: 2011-11-19 (1st XV vs. Letchworth) Sat, 19 Nov 2011 20:51:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2011-11-19-1st-xv-vs-letchworth/ Match report: 2011-11-19 (2nd XV vs. Wimbledon) Sat, 19 Nov 2011 20:51:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2011-11-19-2nd-xv-vs-wimbledon/ Match report: 2011-11-13 (u13s vs. Hackney Bulls) Sun, 13 Nov 2011 17:51:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2011-11-13-u13s-vs-hackney-bulls/ Match report: 2011-11-13 (Ladies XV vs. Chesham) Sun, 13 Nov 2011 00:00:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2011-11-13-ladies-xv-vs-chesham/ Match report: 2011-11-12 (1st XV vs. Braintree) Sat, 12 Nov 2011 20:51:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2011-11-12-1st-xv-vs-braintree/ Match report: 2011-11-06 (u7s vs. Grasshoppers Festival) Sun, 06 Nov 2011 17:51:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2011-11-06-u7s-vs-grasshoppers-festival/ Match report: 2011-11-06 (u8s vs. Grasshoppers Festival) Sun, 06 Nov 2011 17:51:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2011-11-06-u8s-vs-grasshoppers-festival/ Match report: 2011-11-06 (u9s vs. Grasshoppers Festival) Sun, 06 Nov 2011 17:51:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2011-11-06-u9s-vs-grasshoppers-festival/ Match report: 2011-11-06 (u10s vs. Grasshoppers Festival) Sun, 06 Nov 2011 17:51:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2011-11-06-u10s-vs-grasshoppers-festival/ Match report: 2011-11-05 (2nd XV vs. Guildford) Sat, 05 Nov 2011 20:51:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2011-11-05-2nd-xv-vs-guildford/ Match report: 2011-11-05 (5th XV vs. Quintin II) Sat, 05 Nov 2011 16:39:00 +0000 http://www.fulhamrugby.co.uk/fixtures/reports/2011-11-05-5th-xv-vs-quintin-ii/ News: Chairman's October Report

It’s been a very difficult month for the 1st XV having won just one game in this period out of five. The most worrying thing for the team is amount of points they are conceding in each match to opponents and also the lack of stability in the team selection, due to non availabilities and injuries. But the results for the other teams in the league this month has been surprising in some cases, so there is still a chance that the 1st XV will be able to stay in this highly competitive league next season, if they can put a good run of results together over the next few months.

The 2nd XV are still undefeated this season and are playing very good rugby in all their games. New players are coming through the team that might push for a 1st XV place, which bodes well for the club.

There have been a mix of good and bad results in the 3rd XV and 4th XV teams in the past month, but both teams are doing well in the Middlesex Merit Table, which is the most important aspect for each side.

The 5th XV have suffered from selection issues in teams above that have reduced the number of players available to the side, which has meant they suffered during this period. But the team has shown glimpses in the four games already played that they can compete at this level and win a large majority of the remaining league matches.

The second team has made an impressive start to the season winning all their friendly and Zoo Shield League games so far. Playing in The Shield rather than the Middlesex Merit Table is hoped to give the players in the 2nd XV a higher standard of rugby, so that if they are needed to replace players in the 1st XV for one reason or another, its not a too big of a step up for them to make. A great start to the season and let’s hope they can maintain the present momentum right through the season.

Our 3rd XV is making good progress in producing a very strong team that should compete well in its Middlesex Merit Table leagues this season, which they hope too win come the end of April 2012. Captain Mike Gane is blending together a good strong squad of new and old players that have the potential to achieve their goal by the end of April 2012.

It’s been a challenging time for the 4th XV and captain Adam Saul, with quite a few of last season’s senior players being unavailable for one reason or another, but it is slowly coming together with the influx of new and exciting players filling the gaps, and I expect them to be once again fighting for a place at the Middlesex Merit Table play-offs and hopefully the final, where anything can happen.

It’s been a great start to the season for the 5th XV with a mix of new recruits and a few veterans playing social rugby.
