Lions Tour Diary! Wednesday 19th June.

LIONS TOUR DIARY

WEDNESDAY 19th JUNE

Well the Australians are clearly excited about our arrival - they’ve been plastering us all over the news! Have a look at Channel 10’s features on the club’s imminent arrival Down Under…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1yQhJ3xpMM

Meanwhile, the Ladies Tour continues with an appearance at the Lions vs Brumbies match in Canberra. A strong contingent of Ladies and Old Players on show! The group braved the near freezing conditions, and hailstones, to cheer on the team. We’re not mentioning the score. We’re just not.

Tonight the Men’s Tour kicks off in earnest with the final meeting at The Larrik - an opportunity to gather the much awaited stash, try on that sexy blazer and learn your Tour Job fate. Also, the first reading of the ‘Tour Commandments’.

The chaps meet in Melbourne on Monday.

MONDAY 17th JUNE

The Hammers Ladies down under continue their tour! The Ladies took in the Lions vs Waratahs game in Sydney and promptly relocated themselves to the Hunter wine region. By the looks of it, they took full advantage of the local produce.

Some tourism and culture was enjoyed too, the Ladies opting to keep the Hammers on a Boat them running on the other side of the world.

However, the Ladies coaches won’t be too pleased with this scrummaging technique. The angles are just all wrong and I’m pretty sure that’s blatant feeding.

WEDNESDAY 12th JUNE

Yesterday some of the Hammers Ladies were spotted on the TV at the Combined Country game in Newcastle. They’re the ones in the gold onesies!

Here are some of the ladies before the game…

Meanwhile, back at home, the gents’ tour stash has arrived and everyone at the AGM got to excitedly have a look! Here’s what we will be wearing when get there

What are we doing?

The Hammers are joining thousands of fellow Lions supporters in The Land Down Under to cheer on Gatland’s men against the Gold and Green of Australia.

Tickets have been secured for the 2nd and 3rd tests in Melbourne and Sydney, and the midweek game against the Melbourne Rebels!

The Gents’ tour party meets in Melbourne on June 24th. Highlights of the two week tour are;

Lions vs Melbourne Rebels
Local match vs Melbourne team tbc
2nd Test Lions vs Australia in Melbourne
“Hammerball Run” road-trip between to Sydney, taking in the NSW coastline (and wine regions!)
Hammers vs Hammers Old Boys grudge match
Sydney Harbour Cruise
3rd Test Lions vs Australia in Sydney
Tour Court

A trip of a lifetime, and not to be missed!

Chairman's Monthly Report - April

As we moved into the final month of our rugby season, only a few fixtures were played throughout the club.

Mark Blyghton’s 1st XV finished off their league campaign with good wins against Chiswick and Grasshoppers, with slight disappointment of loosing to London Nigerians at their ground on an awful wet and windy day. The team finished fourth overall in the London North West Two League, which was a good performance by the team after so many changes in the squad from last season.

Rogan’s 2nd XV side lost their only game in the month to high flying Barnes, but the side can be proud of their mid-table finish in the Canterbury Shield League and I am sure all the players will be looking to win this league next season.

In the Division One MMT play-off, the 3rd XV unluckily lost away to Civil Service 20-13 after extra time. It a great shame that the side did not get past this final hurdle, as the team has performed extremely well throughout the season in the league that composes of mainly 2nd XV teams of major clubs in our area.

Our Ladies team won their last two away games against Harlow and Romford & Gidea Park to become undefeated champions of the RFUW South East North One League, which is a fantastic achievement for all the players and the coaches. The only competitive game they lost all season came in their last match of the season, which was the final of the RFUW National Cup played in Coventry against once again Romford & Gidea Park. This was a closely contested match which saw our ladies lose by the close margin of
17-12. This defeat did not take away what a great season the team has had and they are now looking forward to playing in Women’s Championship South East 2 League next season.

The Vets side finished off their season by taking twenty one players to the Deal & Betteshanger Tournament, where they were lost in the final against Thanet Wanderers.
Well done to Chris Hunt this season for all his hard work in getting the players out on several occasions and organising a very successful Ireland tour.

What a season the Under 9’s squad has had this season in the youth section, as they won the Staines festival and the Chieftains Cup competition at Battersea Ironsides this month to give them a grand total of four festivals/tournaments they have won during the 2012-2013 season, which summed up how well the whole of the youth section aged groups had done since September 2012.

To round off the youth section season, Jason Leonard and the Mayor of Hammersmith & Fulham Councillor Belinda Donovan attended the youth section end of season party and awards ceremony at Hurlingham Park on the 28th April, to present the trophies for most improved and player of the year in each aged group from U6’s to U14’s. Over 500 players, parents, coaches and volunteers were present at the event which was a great success and everyone had a great time in the sunshine.

This season in now over and we all look forward to the start of fixtures in 2013-2014, were hopefully the club will once again be looking to surpass its achievements of this season, by playing good rugby and having a strong social base once again, for all section of the club.

Terry Alleyne

HFRFC VETS – RUNNERS UP IN DEAL VETS TOURNAMENT

Saturday saw 21 HFRFC Vets, take an early coach down to Deal and Betteshanger RFC, to play in the Man of Kent Veterans Tournament at the former Royal Marine Barracks. Tony Richards had stayed the night before, on the pretext of a romantic weekend and ensured that the Dutch had a very enjoyable, but drunken evening.

The Vets played 5 matches against RC Eemland (Holland) (45-15),
Sheppy RFC (25-0), Canterbury RFC (15-0) , Rye RFC (45-0) and finally lost in a hard fought final against Thanet Wanders RFC, by two tries.

In all, the team scored an impressive 26 tries with Alex Stirling stealing 7 and Barry O’Sullivan 6. But the squad who were missing a number of regular players were joined by 3 Minis Fathers, Luke Cheveau who scored 3 tries, Francois Blisson 1 try and Jorge Soltero, who sadly injured himself early on playing for the opposition.

Sean Richardson was HFRFC Man of the Tournament and enjoyed a pint of wine for his pains as did birthday boy Chris Lilley, who was shamed into being beaten in a drinking race, by a girl.

In all a great tournament and an end to an excellent season.

Chairman's Monthly Report - March

The weather was once again been awful this month and it has caused many fixtures to be cancelled, but luckily we were still able to get some games played.

The 1st XV continued there winning ways in the league by defeating competitive opponents in Harpenden and HAC, with strong defence being the key to winning these games for the Hammers. The HAC game was played mid week under floodlights at the Allianz Park Stadium in Hendon, the new home of Saracens RFC on their new 4G pitch. The watching crowd looked a bit lost amongst 10,000 empty seats, but the match kept everybody warm on a very cold night. It now needs for Hemel Hempstead to slip up in their last few remaining games for any change of Mark Blyghton’s side reaching the second place in the league and going to the play-offs.

Our 2nd XV had a fantastic result against Richmond Saxons in the Canterbury league this month beating them away from home to seal their mid table position in the league. This is a great achievement, as it is a very competitive league throughout. Rogan and Andrew Neal the coach are looking forward to next season, where they hope the team can compete for the top spot.

Well done to our 3rd XV under Captain Mike Gane who have qualified for the MMT semi-final play-offs after beating Civil Service this month. Its look like they may be playing them again in the semi-final, so good luck to the team in this match next month.

Unfortunately the 4th XV could not achieve the results they wanted this month to qualify for the MMT semi-finals, as they lost two out of their three games this month to put them out of contention. It’s proved to be a tough initiation for Adam Saul’s side moving up to the higher division in the MMT league this season, but I am sure they will be fighting once again next season to qualify or the MMT finals.

Even though the 5th XV lost three of their games this month, earlier season form saw them reached the MMT play-offs who they will play Bulldogs for the chance to reach the final in April 2013. This is a great result for the team as the players are constantly changing from week to week and Felix Whitechapel their Captain, has once again done a great job to give the team together all season and make it a hard side to beat.

The Vets raised over £46,000 for the Injured Players Fund from their tour trip to Ireland last month and for his organising and fund raising efforts Chris Hunt the vets captains was made an Honorary Vice President of our club and also receives a signed England jersey on behalf of the vets from Damien Hopley, CEO of the Rugby Players Association at the Old Hams lunch at the Low Country which was attended by over 60 men’s and ladies players of the club. It was a great occasion which was conducted in the usual Hammers way, with lots of drinking and laughter throughout the day and night of the event.

Its official now, the Hammers Ladies are undefeated champions of their RFUW league this season, after beating Romford & Gidea Park away to clinch the title. A great result for all the players and coaching staff. Their fantastic season is set to continue next month after winning the semi-final game in the National Cup against Stoneygate. Their opponents in the final will be once again Romford & Gidea Park. Good luck to the team in the final and hopefully a few loyal supporters will travel up to Coventry to see the game on Sunday 21st April 2013 at 1.30pm.

The youth section had another successful time at the tournaments this month with our U9’s side winning the Etihad Festival at Harlequins RFC and our 11’s coming runners-up in the same competition. Well done to all players who took part and their coaches and volunteers who help to make everything run so smoothly every Sunday morning.

So there are a lot of important games coming up for all sections of the club next month, with various teams looking to get to play-off positions, finals or to win trophies. Good luck to all our teams in April 2013.

Terry Alleyne
